Walking and Talking2018-2019Single-channel video installation, 6 min 21 , Color, sound
Walking and Talking (2018–2019) is structured around a letter addressed to a friend. Filmed in a modern art museum in London, the video features the voice of an African woman reflecting on her position as a non-Western individual within a Western art institution. She addresses issues related to identity, social class, and artistic heritage.
The visual form of the film is marked by a raw aesthetic, with a circular image and a handheld camera that deliberately avoids showing the museum’s artworks, which are regarded as intimidating machines.
The voice is not confined to the background; it is shown frontally, through the narrator’s mouth. This device — which Halloubi describes as “voice-on” rather than “voice-off” — emphasizes the physical presence of speech.
Walking and Talking stands as a manifesto against the abstract notion of a supposedly universal and accessible art.
