TO LEAVE2011Single channel video installation 3 min 40 sec, color, mute
To Leave is a single take lasting over three minutes: a tracking shot from a car filming a boy in a close-up before he moves away with the motion of the vehicle. During his studies in Europe, Halloubi made sure to film the same scene with his brother on the same road in Tangier, not far from the city’s airport, during his trips back and forth.
The sequence in To Leave is the most accomplished: it is animated by unexpected elements that enter and exit the frame. The viewer is placed in the position of someone forced to leave. To Leave is a short but complex manifesto about cinema and migration.
