NATURE MORTE 2013Single-channel video installation 11 min 24 sec color, sound
"Nature morte" is a film dedicated to the Italian painter Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964). The film draws parallels between the artist’s still lifes and striking images taken from art history and events of the 20th century. These comparisons reveal a certain paradox between the turbulent artistic and political climate of the time and Morandi’s quiet, stable still lifes.
Halloubi examines and analyses this paradox, exploring the relationship between the artist and the political and artistic events of his era.
Through Still Life, Halloubi reflects on how to engage with artworks from the past. Should one remain faithful to the artist’s intention, or should one appropriate works that are often historical, social, and political constructions?
